11 tips to keep your house tidy

A friend commented a few weeks ago that she 'doesn't know how I do it' (she was referring to keeping my house clean, even with children running around). That got me thinking and I realized that it isn't even a counscious thought for me.  It is just what I do.

I got it from my mother.  She is a very tidy woman and expected that from her children as well.  I'm sorry to say though that simply expecting it doesn't mean all children will become tidy (I have a very messy sibling that will remain unnamed ;)

So here is a list of some simple things you can do to keep on top of the clutter:

1. (and MOST important) is to never leave a room empty handed!  You know how items somehow appear in rooms they don't belong in?  If you are heading that direction, or passing by, pick up that item and return it to its rightful place on your way.  This is what I find really helps me keep things clean (especially with a toddler who likes to move everything all over the house).

2. Have your children help with clean up.  Expect them to clean up an item (ie. train set) before they move onto another set of toys.  Also have them clean up the room before you leave it.  Of course this doesn't always happen - (especially for impatient me who doesn't like to wait for Hailey to do it by herself - it could take years ;)  So for those times when the kids don't do it themselves there is #3

3.  use quiet/nap time and bedtime at night to do a full toy pick up in your playroom (what is left from the kiddos 'clean' at least).  it really only takes 3 minutes to put the toys in their proper place.  Still leaves plenty of time for you to nap or work on a project.

4.  be organized!  If everything has an assigned place you won't get collections of 'random' items lying around the house.  I am a huge fan of tupperware and my label maker.  Sort things and label them.  Get hooks, shelving units, baskets, etc and sort them out.

5. have a cleaning schedule.  You can plan to clean one or two rooms a day (or if it is more your style set aside a full Saturday to do everything at once).  I prefer to do similar things together on the same day - laundry day, vacuum day, bathroom day, dusting day, yard day.

6.  always clean your kitchen before you go to bed.  It makes a HUGE difference to wake up to a clean kitchen then to face a day with a dirty one from the start.  I lack all motivation to clean the kitchen if I wake up to it already dirty.  It is easier to maintain a clean kitchen than to always be 'catching up'.

7.  Along with #6 you can try to unload the dishwasher shortly after it is finished cleaning.  Than you have an empty/dirty dishwasher to add to that gets the dirty items off the counter right away.

8.  If there is just too much to do (or you are 'too pregnant' or 'too exhausted' with a new baby, or it is spring and every single item in your home needs a clean over) than you can get a team to do all the work so much faster.  Find a friend and trade days where you tackle each other's houses as a team.  Plus you have someone to chat with while you work :)

oh and of course hubby has to be in charge of his own space (which is the garage, his bathroom, the yard and his side of our room- his domain, not mine).  I don't touch those usually.  Sometimes I have to pester and nag and guilt trip to get them done but 95% of the time I don't have to do anything with them.

9.  allow yourself a 'stash room'.  One room in your home where you can chuck stuff that you really don't want to deal with at the time.  A room that no one but you sees ( I use my office/craft room).  Plan to clean this up every month (or so - mine is going on 6 mths dirty probably).  No one has a perfectly clean house ALL the time :)

10.  every month choose a room and reorganize the drawers/shelves (you knows those cupboards you toss tupperware into in the kitchen, or the clothes drawers that are unfolded and containing clothes that no longer fit your children - note to self I need to do both of those).  It helps you see what items you have and what condition they are in.

11.  If you haven't touched it for 6 mths or more - GET RID OF IT!  I am not a collector.  I will be the mean mom who keeps her children's drawings on the fridge for one day then throws them out (I did this with my students as well - poor kids).  If you aren't using it, then you don't need it in your house.  Or if it is something you have rediscovered, that you want to use, put it in a place where it will be seen and therefore used.  Of course you don't have to throw it out.... sell it, donate or repurpose the item :)

Don't be hard on yourself if things aren't in perfect (or even decent) condition.  Right now my home is no 'show home' with our newest addition keeping me tied to the couch all day - and her mouth.  *so don't come by to check on me ;)

But if you put the hard work in at first to get it in good order, then maintaining that order will be far easier (and quicker) for days to come.  Then you can relax and enjoy your clean home for the 5 minutes it will remain so ;)

just a note for Ian as I know he is reading this thinking 'great ideas jen - do you do that?'  Remember dear... we just had a baby.  Think about the way it USED to be (and will be again in the coming months ;)

missed him like crazy!

What a LONG week without my hubby.  I missed him a ton and seeing him again today reminds me of when we first dated.  It is nice to have butterflies again :)

I love this man to bits!

Hailey so sweetly portrayed my feelings when she said repeatedly.... "Hailey miss Dad" (accompanied with a very sad face and a few sniffs for dramatic effect).

Welcome home honey (and I never want to go 7 days without contact AGAIN!)

Busy before?

I am wondering what I spent all my time doing before Quinn was born?  I know I thought I was really busy and didn't have time to get things done... but now I REALLY don't have time.  This summer is going to be a real test of time management.  I will master going out with 2 children.  I will get my butt back to the gym.  I will have a  clean house and cooked dinner.  Some days at least ;)  I love my girls but am struggling not to lose my mind.  By the end of the week I am really not a nice Mommy.... especially with the lack of sleep.

Hailey has started to act out.  I guess she is not happy with the lack of attention she is getting.  I am surprised it took this long to really show itself.  I am working to remember to take special moments with her and give her attention while Quinn is napping.  Her tantrums and freak outs decrease dramatically when she receives this attention so I better keep it going so I don't go crazy.

Ian came home Friday night to a VERY crazy wife.  I almost ran out the door saying "I just had to get away".  You know that feeling where your heart is pounding and you are about to break down in tears in a complete melt down?  That is what I had.  I escaped just in time (thanks to my super husband).  It was wonderful to drive a quiet van with no children demanding my attention - or repeating phrases over and over AND OVER.  Is that normal for toddlers?  Hailey will say the same sentence repeatedly, even after I have acknowledged and answered her.  Make me CRAZY!  Well I enjoyed my brief escape as I picked up a couple items at the store, filled the van with gas and picked up a booster juice for myself and my family.  It was probably only a hour but I was able to come back calm and prepared to face bedtime... and what ended up being a bad night with Quinn.

I am so grateful for Ian!  He knows when I need help and does whatever he can to make things easier for me.  I am a truly blessed wife!  I am also super grateful for my daughters.  This young age isn't my favourite time but it is a precious time that I know I will miss as they become more independant.

Nursing...

Bahhhhhhhh, I hate nursing.... okay, sometimes it isn't bad... but mostly I STRONGLY dislike it.  Does that make me a bad mother?  It seems like everyone enjoys that special time with their baby.  Maybe because I haven't had easy nursers.  My girls both liked to chug as quick as they can gulping tons of air in the process.  This means a lot of burping... A LOT!  It is so time consuming and in the middle of the night that is not what I want to be doing.  It usually involves 3 or 4 rounds of burping in one feeding.  Both of my girls are/were also SUPER STRONG!  They are never still unless they are asleep.  I have to wrestle arms away from their mouths constantly, straighten tightly curled legs and rotate flailing heads.  It is a battle.  A battle intensified by their piercing screams for more food.  As if those aren't enough reasons to dislike the process, add to it the leaking, painful 'let down' reflex, the fact that only I can do it, the public exposure and never being able to get away from baby.  I just keep telling myself that it is best for her and I will sacrifice all the inconvenience, pain and torture for that.

Here is a list of pro's before I decide to quit nursing right now...

it is free
never have to carry bottles
doesn't require heating
lets me see my baby every 3 hours (okay that is a stretch because at 4 am I would rather not see her)
it will strengthen her immune system

hmmmm.. that's about all I can come up with.

Anyone else hate it but still stuck with it?

A baby Story!

Well tomorrow is my due date!  I can't believe that Quinn should still be in my tummy!  I knew she would be early but I never expected 3 weeks early.  It already seems like she has been in our family FOREVER ;)  We love our loud, short sleeping Quinn!  I can't wait though till she sleeps longer than 2-3 hrs at a time.  I'm pooped!

Here is the story of Quinn's birth (without any graphic details):

This pregnancy I started having braxton hicks contractions at 27 weeks.  They occured almost 10 times a day and would happen if I lifted anything, bent over, walked anywhere or ran errands.  These contractions increased in quantity and severity over the remaining 10 weeks of my pregnancy so I was pretty certain that this couldn't occur so regularly and so strongly without it resulting in an early delivery.  I'm sure glad it did.  No one enjoys those last weeks of being pregnant.

2 days before Quinn was born I was having regular contractions every 8-12 min in the morning and then they would become irregular in the afternoon.  We had our annual May Long Weekend BBQ planned for the next day so I was contemplating whether to cancel it or not.  We decided to go ahead with it as nothing happened over night on Friday.  Saturday was busy preparing for the BBQ and like the day before my contractions were regular but didn't seem to get any closer together.... until the BBQ.  I wasn't timing them at this point but they were probably 5-8 minutes apart.  I still didn't think at this point that it was really happening.  The BBQ was a hit and a great distraction from what was really occuring.  I laid down after everyone left (while my wonderful family did all the clean up) and the contractions continued to get closer and stronger.  By 11 pm I figured I should call my doula to come by and we went for a walk.  Everything slowed down during the walk so I figured it was a false alarm and sent the doula home to sleep.

*during all of this Ian and I agreed that if it was really happening tonight that he needed to sleep so that he had the energy to support me through a night of labour (I sure wish I could have slept).  He got in a good 4 hrs before I woke him up.

The doula suggested I take a bath.  If it is real labour it will pick it up quickly... and if it isn't the contractions should stop.  Well as soon as I got out the contractions were 4 min apart and super intense.  We left right away for the hospital at 1 am and called our doula to meet us there.  When we got to the hospital I was only 2 cm BOOOO!  All you Mom's know what terrible news that is!  I decided I wasn't going to lay in bed suffering (as this is the most painful position EVER) so we got up and moved around to speed things along.  Of course this was not okay with the old, CRANKY nurse I had.  Why do I always get the mean ones? She had to get over it though.  I wasn't going to suffer like I did last time because I didn't know that I could help labour along rather than lay there and just endure it.  Thank you doula Jenna for fighting the nurse with me!  The contractions were 2 min (or less) apart and super strong.  I was so tired as it was already 2 am and I didn't think I would get through it.  This time I wanted to go drug free.  I delievered Hailey without an epidural but had morphine and laughing gas.  The drugs made me all loopy and I really didn't remember much about her birth.  I wanted to try without anything this time so that I could remember it.  NEVER AGAIN!  I am so proud of myself for doing it but I remember EVERYTHING and it is TERRIBLE.  The contractions are the worst part.  Pushing the baby out is easier as you know the end is near.

Within 2 hrs I was 5-6 cm and they moved me to the delivery room in case things progressed very quickly.  It took about another hr to get to 10 cm and then it was pushing time.  It took less than 15 min to get her out.  She didn't cry much but had great apgar scores and the nurses said she didn't seem like an early baby.  So maybe the dates were just wrong.

Ian was AMAZING!  He was so supportive and did anything I asked/told him too :)  That nap he had before ended up being a huge blessing for me as he was 100% there for me.  He didn't get faint this time and was right by my side the whole time.  I don't think he even left to go to the bathroom once :)  I was so grateful to have him there.

My doula, Jenna Noble was a huge asset.  We weren't sure about having one but it ended up being a huge blessing.  She gave us both confidence and encouragement.  Though I did want to strangle her if she said one more time "your almost done"!

It was crazy at the hospital, 7 babies were born that night.  Turns out it was a full moon.  Hailey was born on a new moon and it was also crazy busy.  What is with that?  And why do my babies like to torture me with labour all night long?  Next time I want to have a full night sleep before I have a baby.

Our little girl was here, and nameless for the time being!  Weighing in at 6 lbs 9 oz and measuring 21 inches long.  We spent the morning discussing names and decided on Quinn Emma.  Hailey came by later that day to meet her sister.  She was semi-excited but mostly wanted to run around the hospital.  I am so grateful my parents had come out that weekend to help us with house projects.  It was perfect and they were a great help with Hailey.

It has been 2.5 weeks now and we are starting to get used to having a baby around.  I sleep very little and have very little patience for my whiney toddler but we are managing.  I love my girls to bits and am looking forward to the coming weeks/months of sunshine, seeing my sister, attending my brother's wedding and hopefully... sleeping more :)

a new blog banner and title are coming as soon as we get some family pictures

difficult to do

I have begun to find the following things are very difficult to do when you are VERY pregnant:

putting on socks and shoes
carrying laundry baskets
shaving your legs (near impossible now)
bending over to pick things up
sleeping
walking more than 100 meters

Things that are WAY easier to do when you are very pregnant are:

eating
napping
crying

I haven't exhausted the list in any way.... but I have become exhausted!

Baby come out.....

Please baby come out..... Mommy is tired!  Oh wait, that may not help that situation very much now will it?  I can at least look forward to being 1 million times more comfortable in the next 4 weeks.  I'm hoping in 2 :)  Of course I think I am more terrified of giving birth this time as I know what is coming.  I find myself wishing for the ignorance of a first time parent again :)  I was sent into the hospital last week for a NST to check on the baby because her heart rate was high (don't worry everything is fine)... but just being in the same room where Hailey was born brought EVERYTHING all back.   Interesting how you forget about those things when cute chubby cheeks and little bums monopolize your thoughts!

Now the question is 'what do I do with this little lady when baby decides to come?'  It was so much easier with the first delivery because I didn't have to care for another child.  What do you do with your kids when you go into labour?  I sure wish my Mom lived in the same city.

We are doing well though and are very excited to meet our new daughter/sister.  I can't imagine what it will be like with 2..... heaven help us :)
